In 2018, I was proposed and was the lead reporter on an unprecedented analysis of unsolved homicides in major American cities. A team of reporters collected a decade of homicide data from more than 60 major cities, and constructed maps based on where homicides were more likely to go unsolved. The resulting analysis, Murder with Impunity, revealed the places in American cities where murder is common, but arrests are rare — and documented how this impunity undercuts the relationship between law enforcement and the communities it is supposed to serve and drives cycles of violence. Murder with Impunity was a finalist for the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting.
